Guest Blog Post - Balancing BDSM's Subculture within Today's
Sudden Mainstream
Fascination by Cari Silverwood
And then, you have to figure out how much truth your story needs and how much you want to put in there. Some readers will yawn at too much detail about say negotiation before a BDSM scene, and others will get excited. Some readers will faint if you suspend someone by handcuffs, and I'm a bit OMG myself at that one, while others will detest a story with submissive training schools, or a story with Masters with women sprawling at their feet, who go ‘yes Master’ without apparently, any intelligent thoughts in their head, apart from, your cock is magnificent, Sir. And some people want exactly that sort of story. After all, who doesn't sometimes want a story that doesn’t make them think.
The market can determine the amount of truth writers use. If you want money, writing toward mainstream expectations can reap huge rewards. I know I do write in a lot of very good looking men. They might not be Fabio but they are muscular and fit, and I've yet to write in a pot-gut hero. Sorry guys. Yes, I know Doms aren't all perfect, but hey it is fiction.
I do draw the line at certain things. I do like to try to stay true inside a character's head. I try to not write women who never ever question their Dom, probably because that makes me throw up in my mouth just a bit. I like smart or smartass people, and even if they give in to their emotions and instincts, I like them to question their behavior.
I also try to avoid blatantly unsafe scenes, unless it's fantasy in which case to hell with it sometimes. Though if I want to make, say, a Dom seem real, I might throw in a mistake. Writing perfect scenes is crazy. It's like those pictures used to sell food to us. Half the time it's too perfect. Food isn't that shiny, and when you buy the burger you find out its half the size you thought it was and nowhere near as tasty. A bit like real life Doms maybe. Lol
So I cater to the real side of BDSM, but like all fiction writers, I do gild the lily, and when all is said and done, I write stories, not textbooks. Many of those who are in the BDSM community love to read BDSM in fantasy settings in any case. Many like to see the essence of BDSM put into extreme situations where it really isn't BDSM but non con. I have friends who are kinksters who loved Fifty Shades of Gray, despite its iffy BDSM. We don't all like the same things.

Book Description:
Capture fantasies rule her eBook. Re-enacting one in a documentary would surely be irresistible viewing to millions of women?
But Jodie and Klaus discover that underneath an ordinary man dark desires may lurk. What will win in the end? The man and lover, or the monster?
Excerpt:
As I kissed and tasted the tears that had leaked from under the blindfold, I said in a harsh whisper, “I enjoyed seeing you scream and try to escape, loved seeing you dancing away from the cane. Your ass – I’d declare it a work of art. Yeah…” I touched our foreheads together and looked down over her face, stared into her blindfolded eyes, and at her trembling full lips and those amazing tears. I traced my finger down the wet track on one cheek.
My murmur was soft but as deadly, I hoped, as a knife thrust. “I never thought I’d say this, but I enjoy this. You might be in trouble.”
Truth and mind fuck rolled into one scorching bundle. Yes, she was in trouble, but then so was I.
I wanted to do it again. I’d saved her and cared for her so many times. She was a beautiful woman, with a mostly beautiful heart, and I wanted to hurt her and swallow those screams. God, I was so fucked up.

ReplyDeleteI actually have no real life experience with BDSM, but I do love to read stories with it. I am very curious, but do have many trust issues and am a very shy person :) I haven't read the 50 Shades books, probably because I am just not as interested in them as I am in other author's works. This story will definitely be going on my wishlist!

Thank you for having me on your blog. And thanks to everyone who commented.
ReplyDeleteIt is a very intense book. Perhaps more so to those who don't read a lot of BDSM books though.
