Will Charlotte and Reed find… Love Beyond the Curve?

My Review

According to the Beetles, "All You Need Is Love", and while that's true, the path to true love is often filled with difficulties - one of the key issues facing larger women (size 8 and above) today is low self esteem due to today's media images of "the perfect woman".  Kate Patrick's Love Beyond the Curve asks the question "what is the perfect woman" - is it the image we see in glossy ads and television commercials, or is it a woman who will stand by her man, put his happiness above hers and be his full partner in life, business and raising a family?  With a likable characters, frank and occasionally harsh language, Ms. Patrick reminds us that in life "love is all you need".

Leaving her family behind, Charlotte moves from Nashville to Memphis to work as a nurse at St. Jude's Children's Hospital.  A larger sized woman, Charlotte has become accustomed to being "the friend" and not the girlfriend.  Discovering her landlord is hot, Charlotte is prepared to just be friends.  She never planned on falling in love.

Successful contractor Reed Jackson is at a crossroad he doesn't even know about.  Dating women his mother introduces to him, Reed is unprepared when he meets Charlotte, a beautiful woman who happens to be his new tenant.  Getting to know her as a friend, Reed considers himself lucky to count her as a friend - becoming attracted to her as a woman was unplanned but something he considers a plus.  Now he just has to convince her that a real man likes a woman with real curves.

The scenes between Charlotte and Reed are well written and it's easy to see why they get along as friends and have a mutual attraction for each other.  They are each others missing piece.  The biggest problem in their relationship is Charlotte's self esteem issus, courtesy of several relationships she tried to have in the past.  Ms. Patrick did a good job addressing Charlotte's emotions and why she feels how she does.  While there were times I wanted to shake her, for taking one step forward and then two steps back, I applauded the truthful (if sometimes hurtful) way Ms. Patrick addressed how many people in our society look at women who aren't a size 2 or 4.  When Madison Avenue declares a size 8 to be "a plus sized model" - what hope can there be for a woman who's a size 12 or 14?

Will Reed get Charlotte to give him a real chance at love?  Will Charlotte learn that a man really can love her and her curves?  You'll want to read Love Beyond the Curve to find out.

My Rating:  3.5 out of 5 Stars
