On the trail of a killer, and with her old flame back in her life, Detective Alicia Knowles is forced to face the past as she tries to make decisions about her future…
Detective Alicia Knowles once believed there was good in everyone. Not anymore. After a harrowing experience, her life had changed and she was a very different woman. Now more dangerous, she moves through the darkness of her once sunny world, unsure what to do with her pent up feelings of fear and anger.
Even her new boss, Cole Douglass, makes her feel out of control. One night, years ago, he made her feel things she'd never felt with any other man. This time it can only be business between them.
With her latest case, however, temperatures flare.
Their passion is rekindled as the search is on for a missing child and a murderer on the run. Can Alicia protect her heart from the most dangerous power of all…love?

She turned around. Their chests brushed, and she gave him a half-smile. “I know Hannah might not blame me, but I do. A few more moments, it’s all we would have needed. I’d change it if I could.” When Cole opened his mouth, she placed her fingers on his lips to silence him. “I can’t, but I vow to do whatever it takes to catch this son-of-a-bitch.”
Alicia tried to convey the sincerity of her promise as she stared into his eyes. For Hannah, and this man, she’d do whatever she could to bring peace to their family once more.
“I know you would. But you can’t carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. We’ll get him.” He raised his hand to her cheek and pushed back a strand of hair that had fallen over her face. Her breath quickened at the light touch. Her body stilled.
The air crackled with electricity. She was sure he could feel it, too; the tension rolled off his body like waves in the ocean. To walk away would be the best thing to do, but for the life of her, Alicia couldn’t get her feet to move.
“You know what, Ali?” His voice was soft and powerfully seductive. “You know what I remember most about our night together?”
Alicia’s hand clasped his wrist, below where his fingers rested lightly on her cheek. She wanted to fall into his arms, burn beneath his touch again. They’d never talked about it and she was curious to know what he remembered.
She remembered it all.
Every touch and sigh. Every kiss and pleasure she basked in.
Through many a cold and lonely night, she cherished the memories of Cole’s hard body pressed against hers, pushing her against the mattress—and the wall and the bathroom counter—but she marveled at how he’d made her feel like more of a woman in one night than she’d felt in all her adult years.
Her voice hoarse and scratchy, she whispered, “What do you remember?”
“Our fire.”
When his mouth claimed hers, her body ignited with long-repressed emotions. Hunger, mind-blowing hunger, rattled through her. It was so hard to breathe.

Review
With fast paced action, plenty of suspense and a second chance romance, Awakenings by Kacey Hammell is to read. Well developed characters, smart dialogue and emotional angst, this book grabbed my attention from the first page and never let go. Adding a missing kid and a female cop, who's also a recovering rape victim, makes this even more engaging.
Six months after being rescued from a serial killer and rapist, Detective Alicia Knowles is back on the job and having problems. Dealing with issues of guilt, shame and anger she's not prepared to handle her newest case; a drug dealer with a bad reputation and even badder rap sheet. Locating the drug dealer's ex-wife, Alicia is horrified when she and her partner discover the poor woman's broken body on the street in front of her apartment.
While Alicia would normally chase after the bad guy, Alicia is thrown into an episode of shock and behaves erratically and unprofessionally. They not only have to mount a search for the woman's killer, they'll also need to find the woman's small son. I thought Ms. Hammell did a really good job letting us get to know the woman Alicia has become, while giving us glimpses into the past and the woman she was before she was attacked. Even though she has been around the police and law enforcement all of her life, Alicia was a woman who believed that there was good in the world - now she's not so sure.
Recently made Chief of Police, Cole Douglass is still working on getting used to his new job and to his employees. While he's known Alicia on a personal level, she's been anything but welcoming since he came to town. Determined to do his job to the best of his ability and keep Alicia from hurting herself, or anyone else, is going to be a challenge. He just hopes it doesn't come at a the cost of his love for her.
The scenes between Alicia and Cole are full of sexual tension, snappy dialogue and emotional angst. Alicia knows she's broken but for her own reasons, she's reluctant to let anyone get too close and really doesn't want to spend time with the department shrink. For his part, Cole is caught between a rock and a hard place, as her boss he knows they shouldn't be romantically involved but the heart wants what the heart wants and both his heart and his body want Alicia.
The secondary characters are well written and make some nice contributions to the story, I especially liked Ethan James, Alicia's partner, who I think deserves his own story, and both of Cole's younger brothers, who sounded incredibly sexy too! Alicia's cousin Isabella is also a part of this story, and was featured in another of Ms. Hammell's books.
Will Alicia be able to put her personal issues aside long enough to find the missing child? Will Cole be able to convince Alicia she should give their love a second chance? You'll have to read Awakenings to find out, I enjoyed it and I think you will too.
My Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars
