Excerpt :
He
paused at the bottom and sucked in his breath. Not a bomb shelter, not at all.
Although maybe once it had been one. He looked left and right to get his
bearings. Melanie didn’t strike him as the kind of person to lure someone into
an underground shelter and murder him, but then again, he didn’t suppose most
killers actually looked like lunatics.
At
least the ones he had met hadn’t come across immediately as homicidal.
But
as he stared at the stacked shelves, filled with all kinds of items he could
imagine using in a crisis, he had to smile. The various items were homemade,
taped and glued together, none of them in containers that would indicate she’d
purchased them somewhere.
Sustainable
living. It all made sense. She didn’t just somehow grow food in the heat; she
did it to prepare for some kind of disaster scenario.
He
grinned. Melanie looked like his favorite wet dream, and she prepared for
disasters like a sensible, pragmatic person. He’d known lots of people who
prepped for worst-case scenarios in his life. Post September 11th, it seemed
the only smart thing to do. In his apartment in Connecticut, he’d kept medical
supplies, duct tape, and non-perishable food in the back of his hall closet.
Melanie
stood a distance away. “This is why I don’t take money from Victor. This whole
organization is my baby. I came up with the idea. Up there”—she pointed at the
ceiling—“are regular, environmentally friendly condos. Every person who lives
or buys here participates in the farming endeavor. Each condo has a section
like this beneath it, some place to go in the event of a disaster.
Assuming
we don’t have to stay underground, the farm above will feed not only us but
also a great deal of the community.”
Even
as words sank in, he couldn’t help imagining the scene with her trying to
handle feeding the community after an event so huge the world would need help
existing without grocery stores. There would be chaos. She’d need someone there
with a gun to protect her. His years of black ops might come in handy for
something other than tracking down thieves for the drug companies.
What
the hell had happened to his brain? This woman could barely stand him. Why did
his imagination have to conjure up these musings of the two of them together?
He
had to stay on track. “And Victor doesn’t support this? Doesn’t get it?”
