 Guest Post by Serenity Woods

Thanks for having me on your blog today Maria!

Do musicians make good romance heroes? I remember reading in the guidelines of a well-known romance publisher that sportsmen and musicians are two occupations that readers aren’t keen on for romance heroes, because they’re seen as being unstable and unpredictable. Okay, this was a few years ago, and I think there have been plenty of romance novels since then that have proved this to be false. Romance readers love a passionate, hot-blooded hero, and who better to suit this role than a man with music in his soul?

Nate Taylor, the hero of my new book from Samhain called Making Sense, plays guitar in a band in his spare time, and certainly the heroine Freya can’t take her eyes off the sexy, moody Nate when she first sees him performing at a local bar. This isn’t Nate’s main job, though. As with all the heroes in my Sensual Healing series, Nate is a man with an extraordinary talent—he’s a healer, although a terrible trauma in his past means he’s trying his hardest to forget about his gift. The love of a good woman is what Nate needs to get him back on track, and Freya’s more than happy to fulfill that role.

You asked me about how I balance working at a school and writing, as these two careers often seem to go hand in hand. Possibly that’s because of the school hours – although I start at 8am, I’m usually at home by 4pm and I try to squeeze in a couple hours of writing a day. I wonder also whether it’s because the school’s a wonderful place to people watch. Teachers are great characters who are full of life and opinions and ideas, and teenagers are full of emotion and hormones and passion, so it’s a pretty explosive mix!

The other question you asked me was about women and romance in the 21st Century - have we really come as far as we think? Okay, sometimes I wonder! I was told recently that the alpha male is making a comeback and certainly women seem to love the aggressive, passionate hero who bosses the heroine around. But does that mean we’ve forsaken our women’s rights? No, of course not. I believe alpha males are like high heels – great for the bedroom but a nuisance in everyday life. We like our men to be challenging and demanding behind closed doors, but most women I know would be horrified if their partner stopped them from doing what they wanted to do in real life. My heroes certainly reflect this—they can be demanding and forceful in the bedroom, but they’re always respectful and caring, and they’d do anything for the woman they love.

Sound good? Here’s a snippet of Making Sense if you need any further convincing:

“I’d throw my underwear at him,” said Freya, eyeing the singer on the stage, “but I’m not wearing any.”

Mia stared at her for a moment, startled, then collapsed into laughter at Freya’s mischievous smile. “Freya! Honestly?”

“Nope.” Freya rested her chin on her hand, watching the man croon into the microphone. “The only pair left in the drawer were the ones that come up to my armpits, and it’s too hot for those.”

“I’m shocked. I never knew you were such a hussy.”

Freya shrugged and sipped her wine. “I’m not going commando out of sexual deviance. I’m doing it because every other pair I own is in the laundry basket.”

“Since when do you not have any panties in your drawer? Normally they’re all washed, starched and ironed the same day you take them off.”

“I’m taking a leaf out of your book. The Slut’s Guide to Housekeeping.”

Mia snorted. Freya laughed and sipped her wine again. She was on her third glass and knew she should slow down, but the bar was roasting hot, and the wine was icy cool. Besides, she hadn’t felt this relaxed for weeks.

Mia’s comment irked her, though. Why had her friend been so shocked to think she might leave the house without underwear? Was she really so staid and boring?

“Seriously though,” said Mia, unwilling to let it go, clearly stunned by Freya’s apparent laundry transgression, “what’s going on?”

“Just been too busy. Between night shifts and studying, I haven’t had much time to think about the state of my underwear drawer.”

“Oh…I forgot—you’ve got an exam next week, haven’t you?” Mia stretched out her legs in front of her. “You’re excused, then. Besides, I can’t talk, you’re right. I haven’t done my laundry this week, and I’m on vacation.” Mia was a teacher, currently living it up during the summer break. “Still,” she continued, “if you’re thinking about bumping uglies with our young Mr. Taylor up there, you might want to consider getting your underwear drawer sorted. You don’t want him to get his hand up your kilt only to find you’re sporting Magic Knickers.”

“True.” Freya studied the singer and lead guitarist currently breathing his way through a very sexy rendition of an old blues song and wished she were the sort of person who had the self-confidence to get down and dirty with someone like Nate Taylor. The deep tones of his low voice cut through the hum of the crowd, doing strange things to her nether regions. Or maybe it was just the three glasses of Sauvignon and the sultry ambience that were making her feel sexy.

She hardly ever went out on a Friday night, and the atmosphere of the downtown Wellington bar was both overwhelming and exciting. Her ears rang from the loud conversation and the throbbing music, and her nostrils stung from the smell of spilled beer and the acrid bite of the smoke brought in by those who’d snatched a quick cigarette outside. The hot and humid January air made sweat run down her back, even though she wore only a vest and a pair of light cotton cut-offs.

But the weather wasn’t the only hot thing around. Freya had to admit, Nate Taylor was possibly the sexiest man she’d ever laid eyes on.

One night can loosen the grip of the past. Only love can break it completely.

Sensual Healing, Book 2

Freya Fletcher longs to travel and use her nursing skills abroad. But while her father keeps gambling away her meager savings, she’s anchored to her hospital job and family responsibilities.

When friends ask her to a bar one evening to support a local band, Freya goes along reluctantly. But she’s glad she took the night off when gorgeous Nate Taylor turns out to be the lead guitarist and singer. Too bad there’s no room in her complicated life for anything resembling love.

Following a car accident at age fourteen, Nate awoke with an ability to heal. Now, hounded by the family that used him, haunted by the memory of a boy he couldn’t save, he is a man on the run. Although the promise of peace glows brightly in Freya’s beautiful eyes, his past, weighing heavily on his soul, won’t let him reach for it.

Luckily, the delectable Freya doesn’t want a relationship either. They come together for one night, just casual, no strings. But one night quickly turns into several. Before long they’ve fallen in love, but until they can find a way to break free of their pasts, a happy future will remain only a distant dream.

Warning: An unashamedly romantic and sexy story guaranteed to make you laugh and cry. Please do not read unless you like brooding heroes, fun and feisty heroines, and a touch of the Twilight Zone.

Blurb:

Anna is broke. Really broke. Credit cards maxed out. Store cards, too. She can’t make her repayments and there’s nowhere to turn.

Educated, intelligent, and—until recently—upwardly mobile, Anna is forced to make a choice. Sink or swim. And swimming means finding a part-time job to complement her full-time career. One that would pay enough to get her head above water. Except that part-time jobs don’t pay. Usually.

Drawn into the sordid world of private escorts, Anna discovers there is little she won’t do for money, lots and lots of money. She even starts to enjoy the sex. Until she meets an unusually seductive client who introduces her to the world of Dominance and submission. Then everything changes.

Excerpt:

Adam smiled and offered her a fold of bank notes.

“For you.”

She felt a pang of disappointment. But this was business, after all. What had she expected?

Tucking the money into her handbag, a recent purchase from a very exclusive designer, she wondered which of them would initiate the next move. He was looking at her with enough intensity to see into her soul, but then he lowered his eyes.

“Do you like men looking at your breasts?” he asked.

“Not always.”

He leaned forward and spoke quietly.

“I think the correct answer is ‘yes.’ ”

She nodded in understanding; unable to believe how quickly everything had changed.

“Why don’t you ask whether they please me?” he continued.

She licked her lips. Her mouth was dry. She wasn’t even sure she had the ability to speak.

“Do you find my breasts pleasing?”

“Very much so. But, under the circumstances, I think I would prefer it if we could be a little more down to earth. Why don’t we agree that we will call them tits?”

She shuddered. It wasn’t as if she hadn’t heard the word before. In fact she often used it herself in her line of work.

“Let’s try again.”

“Do you find my tits pleasing?” she asked, swallowing hard over words that were usually so easy for her.

“So much better. Yes, I do. Now let me ask you a question. Would it please you to have them touched?”

“Yes. Please touch them.” Thankfully Chloe had taken over—a professional willing and capable of assuming the role he wanted her to play.

“What exactly would you like me to touch?”

“My tits. Please touch my tits. They are aching so much.”

“Then perhaps it would be better if you removed your clothes.”

She stood and faced him. It had not taken her long to learn how to stage-manage undressing, and her performance was faultless. Naked, she lowered herself onto his lap, making sure he noticed that her nipples were already standing hard and proud. As she had known he would, he placed a hand lightly on each breast.

“Harder,” she demanded, leaning back and closing her eyes as if in pleasure. “Squeeze them.”

His touch was nowhere near enough to satisfy her, even had it been what she wanted.

“Harder.”

He removed his hands altogether.

“I’m not sure you really understand your situation, Chloe,” he said. “You are here for my pleasure. Not the other way round.”

“Oh.” She was hugely embarrassed. “Of course. I am so sorry. How may I please you?”

Anna had never misjudged a client so badly.

“I think I would like to see your tits hanging down. Would you place your arms on the back of that chair and lean forward?”

“Of course.”

He stood beside her and cupped each dangling breast in turn, weighing it and feeling the fullness. To her horror she felt herself respond when he grasped a nipple, pulling it downward as if to milk her.

Unable to help herself, she groaned loudly.

“Please control yourself.”

“I’m trying,” she gasped.

He continued to attend to her tits and nipples with one hand while the other rested on her back. Pleasure beyond anything she had known coursed through her, and unintentionally she bucked her hips again.

“Chloe.” She heard his annoyance.

“I’m sorry.” Her voice wavered. She really did want to carry out his wishes; it was after all what she was being paid to do.

“Stand up.”

Her nipples were painfully hard. She waited obediently, hoping that he would touch her again, anything to relieve the ache. He stared openly at the patch of dark hair between her legs.

“Please,” she begged without thinking.

“Have you forgotten already?”

“No.” Her voice shook.

“No, what?”

She had no idea what he wanted from her.

He walked behind her.

“No, Master,” he whispered into her ear.

“No, Master,” she repeated, thankful for the instruction.

“That’s better. Again.”

“No, Master.”

“Now tell me what it is that you haven’t forgotten.”

“That I am here for your pleasure, Master. Not my own.”

“Good. Now we can really begin.”

My Review:

With more heat than a Texas Wildfire, Galia Ryan takes her characters to the edge in Choices.  With flawed personalities, unexplored sexuality and explicit language, Ms. Ryan explores the desires and determination of a young woman introduced into Dominance and submission.  Ms. Ryan also introduces us to a hero so flawed, it's almost as easy to hate him as it is to like him.

Upwardly mobile, college educated Anna works as a loan officer in a bank.  When the economy takes a turn for the worse, and she's maxed out her credit cards and is behind on her utilities, Anna decides to get a second job.  Only she can't find a second job she's qualified for which won't interfere with her day job.  Looking through the want ads, Anna stumbles across an ad for an escort service.  Deciding she can put her personal distaste aside for a few months in order to dig herself out of her financial problem, Anna applies for a position as an escort and gets accepted.  Naive and sexually inexperienced, Anna had no idea how this temporary job would change her life.

Introduced to men from only the highest social and financial classes in life, Anna soon finds herself leaving her misgivings behind and embracing her new lifestyle.  Everything changes once she meets Adam, a powerful and influential client who embraces the dark side of Dominance and submission.  Drawn in by her own desire Anna finds herself engaged in behavior she never expected to enjoy.  Ms. Ryan did a great job with both Anna's character, her awakening sexuality and her growing addiction to a lifestyle she's just begun to explore.  While I wasn't fond of Adam's style of training, or the way he treats all women, Anna could have chosen to stop him at any time.

While the focus of this story is mostly on Anna and the woman she becomes, the secondary characters are important to Anna's present and her future growth.  We get introduced to Stephanie, the young woman who  owns the service Anna works for and we get to meet a couple of the other escorts.  All educated, bright and beautiful women, they work at helping Anna adjust to her new world.  We also meet Jake, a young fireman attracted to Anna.  As they begin to develop a relationship, Anna will have to decide which lifestyle she wants more.

What will Anna choose when she's given a choice between being "owned" by Adam and his lifestyle of luxury or walking away from it all to be with Jake and have a regular life?  You'll have to read Choices to find out, I loved it and I think you will too.

Guest Post - Leah Braemel

First off, huge thanks to Her Majesty for inviting me to be on her blog today, and letting me talk about my Christmas novella, I Need You for Christmas.  Since I grew up in an area where Christmas trees were the local cash crop, it seemed fitting that when asked to write a Christmas story I’d set it right in my own back yard.  While I didn’t want to follow the standard Canadian stereotypes, I did make my heroine a Mountie. Because I wanted to torture her and the love of her life Ryan. And since Ryan was the one who lived in the Haliburton Highlands in central Ontario, and I wanted them to have been separated by a great distance, Meg ended up serving in Nunavut, one of the three Canadian territories up in the arctic.

Now they’re together for the holidays, Ryan and Meg are intent on making up for all the months since they’ve last seen each other. Since Ryan is an artist, he can be rather creative in the bedroom. Or the loft. I had a lot of fun writing them, although I did pause when I wrote about a specific creation of Ryan’s, wondering whether I’d gone a little too far.  But I figured he’s a guy, and he’s a sculptor, so why not sculpt something so close at hand. ;)

If you were artistic, and could make a sculpture or carving of anything in the world, what would you create?  Leave a comment for me for a chance to win your choice of one of my backlist.  Then pop over to my website and leave a comment for a chance to win a Kindle in my “I Need A Kindle for Christmas” contest.

Ryan Porter is a sculptor, and beneath his callused hands, even the most rigid metals bend to his will. So, too, does his girlfriend Megan--a confident, strong woman who delights in submitting to Ryan's dominance in the bedroom.

Megan is a Mountie, and she's spent the past few years in the Arctic following her career dreams. Family obligations kept Ryan at home, but their love survived the distance thanks to several hot visits. A Mountie always gets her man, and Megan is bound and determined to keep Ryan.

Now Megan's with Ryan for the holidays...but how long will this visit last? She's always been willing to do anything Ryan desires, but will he finally tell her that all he needs for Christmas is her?

34,000 words

Excerpt:

The scent of bacon and cinnamon and coffee penetrated Meg’s consciousness long before she convinced her eyelids to open. Accompanied by Ryan’s off-key warbling of “Baby It’s Cold Outside”, she stretched beneath the duvet and planned out her day. Which consisted of…what? Staying in bed all day was tempting, but that probably wasn’t an option, especially since she’d promised Amy she’d help her do her annual Christmas-cookie-making marathon.

Grumbling about having to get up, yet excited to be spending the day with Ryan, she tossed back the covers and padded to the washroom. Once she’d had a shower and dressed, she wandered out to the kitchen where Ryan was frying bacon wearing only a T-shirt and butt-hugging briefs. Standing in the doorway, she stayed quiet, appreciating the sight of his long legs with their muscular thighs and calves from miles of riding his bike over the hilly gravel roads in the area. Legs that had clenched around her the night before, the rough hair tickling her cheeks when she’d gone down on him. Then later, they’d brushed the insides of her thighs when he’d ridden her until they were both out of breath, sweaty and sore and thoroughly satisfied.

The music changed to “Silver Bells”, or as he sang it, Silver Balls. Guys. For such a talented artist, talk about tone deaf.

“Aren’t you worried about grease splatter?” She grabbed a mug and filled it with coffee.

Ever the wise man, he waited until she’d had her first full hit of caffeine before taking the cup and placing it on the counter. As she was about to protest, he wrapped his arms around her. With one hand firmly cupping her butt, he kissed her until they were both breathless.

“I wasn’t expecting you to wake up so early. You were sleeping like a log when I got up.” Ryan’s satisfied smile told her he knew full well he was the reason she’d slept soundly. “I was planning on bringing you breakfast in bed.” His hand squeezed her behind then released her. “But now you’re up, you sit your butt on the couch while I finish here.”

“You spoil me.” She picked up her coffee and headed to the couch, but not before stopping off to admire the seven-foot live pine taking over the corner. Nestled among the original blown glass ornaments and metal pieces Ryan created were a dozen or more embroidered pieces. They’d been his mother’s creations—he’d told her that until his father remarried and his new wife moved in, his mother’s needlework adorned just about every surface in the house.

She stroked the long needles; the scent of pine brought memories flooding back. “Do you remember our first Christmas tree?”

He chuckled. “Not the tree itself, but I remember trying to impress you by driving you out to Shewchuk’s tree farm and getting stuck in the ditch. Not my finest moment.”

“I was remembering what happened after we brought it home.” How they’d made love after they’d decorated it.

“I’ll never forget that part of the day, babe.” His voice was soft.

While she’d always loved the spirit of Christmas, she’d seldom found it at her family’s home. For some reason her parents fought more over the holidays, and the Christmas carols she’d play seldom drowned out the shouting matches. Though she hadn’t told him, she suspected Ryan had when he had invited her to his family’s place for Christmas their first year together and included her on the tradition of picking out the family’s tree.

If she hadn’t already been falling in love with him, he’d sealed the deal when he’d said he loved her that afternoon.

My Review:

An fun, hot and updated take on The Gift of the Magi, Leah Braemel's I Need You For Christmas is guaranteed to please any erotic romance reader.  With well developed characters, plenty of emotional angst and just the right amount of sensual romance, I found my attention captured from the first page.  Taking place in Canada during the holiday season, Ms. Braemel's gives us the perfect setting.

Artist Ryan Porter can't wait for girlfriend Megan Sullivan to come home for Christmas.  A Canadian Mountie by training, Megan has been stationed far away at a Northern post only able to come home several times a year.  Determined to spend more time with the woman he loves, Ryan has a surprise gift for Megan this Christmas.

Canadian Mountie Megan Sullivan has missed her man.  Determined to spend the rest of her life with Ryan, Megan plans her own special surprise for Christmas; leaving the Mountie service, Megan has already applied and had her application accepted by the Ontario Provincial Police.  She just has to keep it a secret till Christmas Day.

The scenes between Ryan and Megan are very well written and full of sexual heat; lovers who've been separated by space and time, these two have a lots to make up.  Making sacrifices for others is easy; keeping the surprises they have planned for each other not so much.  Though tempted to tell each other their secrets, both Ryan and Megan manage to hold on.  Ms. Braemel did a great job developing both of these characters; truly in love they're willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for each other.  Learning the history of their relationship through flashbacks is the perfect way to get to know them both as a couple and even as individuals.

What will happen when Ryan and Megan give each other their presents on Christmas day?  Who will get the biggest surprise of all?  You'll have to read I Need You For Christmas to find out.  I really enjoyed it and I think you will too.
