FROM A STRANGE PENTINENCE

I heard the grinding of a distant motor. The watercolor layer had dried, and I was working with an olive green pencil now. I drew faster, filling in the gnarls of tree roots around the swamp’s edge. The gritty crunch of tires on rough terrain grew louder, harder to ignore.

I reached for the knife under my pencil bag and ran my thumb along its edge. The scalloped blade gave me some small comfort.

A vehicle was definitely driving my way. There was no other road to fork off to. This was it. A truck pulled to a stop. I saw its hot tamale red surface through the trees when I whirled around. The definitive bam of doors firmly shutting and hearty drunken laughter molested the quiet.

I gulped as chills shot through me. I thought of hiding, but where? All of these trees were stumpy, winding little fuckers. Plus my colored pencils and drawing pad were sprawled over the bank.

“There’s a car up in here with a Virginia license,” bellowed a guy. “Some crazy ass hiking?”

Oh, yeah, there was that. My rental car. Dead giveaway.

“Pretty swampy for a hike. Maybe good for a juicy lay if you fancy mud wrestling.” Loud guffaws again.

Two burly guys were practically upon me, one swinging the remaining two beers in the six-pack held together by plastic rim packaging, the other clomping over stones and roots in his pointy cowboy boots.

I heard my friend’s voice in my head. “Listen, Kacey, the murderer bound those poor girls up with duct tape to trees, slashed open their guts, and all their intestines and shit glopped out.”
