About the book:

When her son’s life is threatened, Anissa, Marchioness of Overton, seeks refuge by sailing to America. Before the ship reaches the high seas, sparks fly between her and Captain Alex Hawks. Although the young widow may be lonely, and afraid, she cannot risk the diversion a romantic entanglement could bring, no matter how much she wants to lose herself in the captain’s embrace.

The Captain vows to protect the young Lord Overton, but can offer no assurance that the marchioness will leave his ship with her virtue intact. Alex is drawn to Anissa’s beauty and courage, as a hummingbird is to the nectar of a flower. How long can he fight a losing battle before he surrenders and makes her his own?

Will Alex be able to keep this remarkable woman and her child safe? Will his passion for Anissa be enough or will their differences keep them apart?

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

Coming to a stop in front of her, the captain bowed. “Good mornin’, ma’am. I hope you were able to get some sleep. Did Martin show you to the galley?”

“Good day, Captain. I did get some rest, and we finished breakfast a few moments ago. Harry enjoyed Elton’s porridge. Please let me introduce you to my son. Harry, this is Captain Hawks. He’s been kind enough to let us travel on his ship.”

Alex gave him a welcoming smile. “Pleased to meet you, young man. Welcome aboard.”

Harry bowed, and then his eyes widened. “Do you have guns on your ship, sir?”

Crouching down, the captain answered, “We do have guns for protection. However, my ship is primarily for cargo. If you’d like, I’ll give you a tour.” Anissa was taken aback at the way Captain Hawks seemed to know how to deal with a young boy. She had expected him to be somewhat short with Harry.

Harry chirped in his high-pitched voice, “Great. Captain, how long will it take us to get to America?”

Captain Hawks stood and placed his hand on her son’s shoulder. “If the winds are favorable, we should arrive in Baltimore in six weeks. With your mother’s permission, I’ll give you a tour.” The captain offered her his arm.

The captain showed great patience while answering the dozens of questions her son asked. He explained the use of the different sails and rigging. He even took them up on the bridge. He showed Harry the helm, lifting him up, so he could feel what it was like to steer the ship.

Once Captain Hawks finished the tour topside, he showed them around below, so they would know what part of the ship was off limits. When they returned to the deck, the captain turned to Anissa. “I’m sure you weren’t able to bring much with you, ma’am. If you want, I can offer you the use of my small store of books to help pass your time.”

Surprised pleasure surged through her at the captain’s thoughtfulness. “Thank you, Captain. Your offer is much appreciated.”

“Please follow me and I’ll show you where I keep my books.”

When Anissa entered the cabin, he led her over to the bookcase, and she selected Robinson Crusoe to read to Harry, since he should enjoy it; most boys would.

After leaving his cabin, the captain escorted her and Harry back to theirs and excused himself. Anissa watched as he made his way back to the companionway and disappeared.

What an interesting turn of events. Captain Hawks had treated her with the utmost respect and had been so patient with Harry. Perhaps, she had been too quick to judge him. She would give him a chance to redeem himself and would reserve judgment on his character until she had an opportunity to get to know him better.

This voyage might not be the nightmare I expected after all.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Vikki Vaught started her writing career when a story invaded her mind and would not leave.

Over the last few years, she has written more than a half dozen historical romances and is presently working on her next. Her new release, Lady Overton’s Perilous Journey, is the first book in her Honorable Rogue series.

Vikki loves a "Happily Ever After", and she writes them in her stories. While romance is the central theme of all her books, she includes some significant historical event or place in all her novels.

While all her books are love stories, she has also written short contemporary sweet romances as Vikki McCombie and erotic romances using the pen name of V.L. Edwards.

For the last decade, Vikki has lived in the beautiful foothills of the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee with her beloved husband, Jim, who is the most tolerant man in the world to put up with her when she is in a writing frenzy. When she is not writing or working her day job, you’ll find her curled up in a comfortable chair reading her Kindle, lost in a good book with a cup of tea at her side.

    1. I try to walk, but I'm not consistent. I know I need to make myself go, but I just stay so busy between working 40 hours a week and writing, plus finding time to read a bit.

    1. That's hard to say. I used to say GWTW, but I recently re-read it and changed my mind. I love Mary Balogh's Slightly series, especially Slightly Dnagerous.
