I’ve learned a lot about BDSM, fetishes, and kinks in the last few years (no complaints here!) and one thing I’ve always struggled with is how body image plays a part in it. I’m fascinated that people not only do go naked around others but that they actually get off on it. I always thought exhibitionism was for thin people or those who were comfortable with their body. But what did that mean for someone with body issues? Did that mean they couldn’t be an exhibitionist?

Those questions led me to create the curvy, introverted Danielle Walker, a woman who at twenty-five years old has yet to fully express her sexuality, hiding what she perceives are shameful desires. She has exhibitionist tendencies but for many reasons, the primary being her dissatisfaction with her body because she’s plus-sized, she’s led a sheltered life. But when the kidnapping of her stepmother forces her into becoming a sex slave trainee at Cole Walker’s sex club Benediction, she’s given the opportunity to explore her sexuality.

From the moment Danielle steps into Master Cole’s office, he challenges her to accept the beauty of her body and her desire to expose it.

Here at Benediction, she was a blank slate. She could be whomever she wanted.      “No one has to say it to my face.” She motioned to the wall of mirrors.   “It’s very clear every time I’m forced to see my reflection.”

     With two of his fingers under her chin, he turned her head away from the mirrors to stare into his warm eyes. “Then you’re looking in the wrong ones. You’re beautiful. You’ve always been beautiful.” He tucked a strand of her hair behind her ears, his tender touch eliciting a shiver. “And I’ll prove it to you. Let my photos be your mirror. See yourself as I see you.”

As the book progresses, Cole DeMarco shows her how to accept her exhibitionism and her body. While I’m not sure I’ll ever feel comfortable dropping my clothes in public, I now understand exhibitionism and I applaud those who despite not being one-hundred percent comfortable with their body, don’t allow it to interfere with their sexual desires.
