Hi - I’m Michele and I’m an Undomestic Goddess.

I’m a smart, driven, competent person, but truly, I am a terrible ironer. And cleaner. And my desk is a mess. I cook well, and I sometimes hang out the washing, but really, I’m just a crap domestic goddess.

This topic springs to mind today because I’ve been to the midwife – I’m also about to have my second baby (I know, I know, madness). Someone must have had a whole bunch of time up their sleeve and put it to good use. A stack of fliers for iron supplements sat next to me and on each and every one, someone had added an ‘ing’ to iron. So the by-line read:  ‘Life is busy and you might find you’re feeling a little off colour. The solution might be very simple. Thousands of women don’t get enough ironing.’

Genius.

I sympathise with Felicity – the heroine in Love Lost and Found the follow up to my debut romance The Boss and Her Billionaire. She loses the last five years of her when she has a climbing accident (yes, yes, amnesia trope alert!) and now she’s cosseted on board a cruise ship with people cooking, cleaning, even pressing her uniform for her. I think if we ever met over a cocktail or two we’d both bemoan the need for ironing of any sort.

It would be incredibly hard though I think, to reintegrate into the ‘world’ after losing such a large chunk of your life memories and there’s plenty about life that fills Felicity with terror. But then she’s not one to let a little terror get in the way of getting on with starting over.

I guess that makes her a lot like me. I’m not afraid of the rolled eyes and sighs from my husband when he sees that I still haven’t done the dishes. Because I know if I leave them, just for a minute longer, I’ll finish that sentence. And the next. And then I’ll have a shiny new book which is of course, just what I want.

How about you? Do you manage it all? Well groomed children, sparkling home? If you do – perhaps you could give me some pointers.

I’m looking forward to hearing from readers so I’d love to hear from you all.

Excerpt

George appeared at Felicity’s door with a huge block of chocolate he’d somehow managed to wrangle from the kitchens. “I tried for ice cream but they only had it in twenty-liter tubs. I figured that wouldn’t do either of our figures any good. Have to say I didn’t think I’d be getting a call from you tonight. Certainly not one that started and ended with a command to bring cookies and cream.”

“Why not? I’m thinking of changing my food pyramid to have ice-cream at the top. I might as well go live in a nunnery for all the action I’m about to get.”

He gave her an odd look then rallied. “Oh, sweetcheeks, I think that would be a very bad idea. Can you image the havoc that would cause amongst the visiting monks? And you’d have to cover this glorious hair.”

“It’s hardly glorious. God, I’m a mess. No wonder he doesn’t love me. No one does. No one ever has except my parents and they’re dead. Oh my God, I sound so whiny, I’m never like this. Never.”

“Oh darling. We all love you.”

“Yes, but you have to. I’m in charge of paying you.”

“True. But we don’t have to like you. Here, stop that now, you’re getting blotchy.” George handed her a box of tissues and pushed her gently onto the bed.

Felicity gave a sniff and let her breath shudder out before she allowed herself to talk again. “I think you better hand over that chocolate.”

“That’s my girl.” Ripping open the packaging, George broke off a giant chunk. “I’d give you the whole block, but I think I better stay on ration duty, just till you’ve evened out. Don’t want you going into a sugar coma after you inhale the whole block in less than a minute.”

“Unfair. If a girl can’t ruin herself on chocolate, what’s the point of anything?”

About Michele

Michele was born in the mid 1970’s amid a burgeoning sprawl of vineyards and new retirement homes. With two teachers as parents, her love of reading and books was cemented at an early age. Being a writer however, was not was she was supposed to do when she ‘grew up’. Despite training in law (or perhaps because of it) she has been a dancer, producer, writer, and all round arty type in various countries for most of her life.

Moving into writing full time in 2010 was like being a part of a contemporary romance – perfect! Creating new worlds for her characters, or rather letting those same characters show her their worlds is now a highlight of Michele’s daily life. And falling in love over and over as each hero and heroine allow their true feelings to surface is something very special. What a treat to do it every day! Now back home in New Zealand after travelling extensively, Michele writes from an office where the sound of the tapping keyboard is only rivalled by the whisper of wind in the trees.

  4. I actually enjoy ironing. I know, I know. I enjoyed the excerpt, but somehow it didn't connect with the blurb a bout the story. I guess I will have to read the book to find out what is going on.

  5. I am definitely an undomestic goddess. I have yet to master the art of making rice, can't iron to save my life, and at times my clothes carry an interesting scent that many regard as "funky".

  6. When I would visit my parents in Australia I would hang the laundry outside. I love doing that, there's something very relaxing about it.

  7. Great post! I still have the ironing board hanging up in the closet, and I only do laundry when I feel like it, which means "when people at work start noticing my mis-matched socks"!

  8. I don't mind cleaning once I get started-- I'm like a machine once I get going-- but it's that *getting going* thing I have a problem with. Cooking? HA! I can't cook to save my life. Actually, that's why I don' cook: To save my life. My house and I would go down in flames. I'm a disaster in the kitchen ;-)

  10. LOL...I often say to my hubby, "We're PIGS!" It's just the 2 of us (and 3 cats) yet the house seems to be in constant disorder. It's the 2nd law of thermodynamics in action!

  12. Hi all and thanks for all the comments. I wrote this post a couple days in advance, luckily as that baby just popped out! So sorry I've been late in stopping by. Good to know I'm not alone in my undomestic goddess world. With a new baby and a toddler I'm about to become even more undomestic...that iron might as well go in the trash I say. Happy reading! X Michele

  13. Congratulations on the new book and the new baby! There are more important things in life than cooking, cleaning and ironing. I suppose I will never win that domestic goddess award.

  16. sounds fantastic! Congrats to Michelle on the newest release! Ummm... I'm the opposite of Michelle as I can't leave things undone, especially when it comes to housework. But I also don't have creative neurons firing :)
