The Joys of Reading In Bed on Sunday

I love Sundays, while I do get up early to fix breakfast and attend church, I always come back home with lunch and then I curl up in bed, under a blanket and read. Sometimes I read on the kindle, sometimes it's a print book, it doesn't really matter because nothing is better than being able to read and then if I need a short nap - I can do that too. What are your plans for today?

I've just started reading The Price of Temptationby Lecia Cornwall, it's pretty good so far.

I have most of my outsidefamily already bought for but my children only a few things so far. I am so looking forward to seeing all thefaces of my loved ones as they open their gifts.

Recently I asked a fewquestions to everyone and anyone that would listen. For this blog the question is: If money wasno option what would you want wrapped in a bow?

Really simple-my house, thethought of having my house paid off sends me full of glee. Hell, I don’t even want a new one, just this one;with a deed stating paid in full and that it is all ours… lol.

With a flick of his hand, thelights next to the bed turned on as did a few lamps across the room. Once myeyes adjusted, I got a better look at the amount of presents. Hundreds litteredthe room. The only space not filled was around the bed and a path to two doorsin opposite directions. Red, green, and gold splattered the room in a festiveshow of color.

“You really are Saint Nic.”Astonished I tried desperately to keep my mouth closed.

“Please don’t call me that.”

“Why not?” Turning away fromthe presents I turned my gaze to Nic’s in question.

“Because, I’m nowhere near asaint.” Brows furrowing Nic stared intently at the computer screen.

“Then how did you get thename?”

“That would be Jaysen’sdoing. One day, not to long after I started giving the gifts, we got into anargument. I don’t remember most of what was said, after all, it was quite awhile ago, but I do remember the comment was rather snide. To this day neitherof us knows how it ended up outside our argument, but it still reminds me ofthat comment. Besides saints are deemed so because of the greatness they do formankind all I do is give a few toys to some kids.”

Moved by the noticeable hurtin his eyes, a relentless knot twisted in my stomach. Though I still didn’tknow him, the connection between us grew with each passing moment.

Whether it was hormones orthe fact that we were supposed to be mates, I didn’t know, but I couldn’t standto see him sad.

I scooted out of the bed andmade my way to him, wrapping paper shuffling under my feet. Then, as if it werethe most natural thing to do, I lowered myself into his lap and hugged himclose. “To those kids you are the world.”

“That’s why I do it everyyear. Though not in the grand scale that everyone thinks. I try to help atleast a few orphanages and hospitals each year.”

“See, you are a saint. Everyyear you create the biggest rush of hope and joy to the children across theworld. Though you can‘t help them all, the small sacrifices you have made overthe centuries have helped to shape our world and helps friends and familieslearn the true meaning of giving. Without you there would be no hope of aperfect

Christmas. If that isn‘t theact of a saint, I don‘t know what is.”

With a grunt in my ear, Nic’sarms tightened around me as he buried his head in the hair between my shoulderblade and ear.

Pulling away slightly, Iraised my hands and held of each side of his head. My fingers ran though thesilken strands of his hair using that leverage I brought his head up until oureyes met. Leaning down I kissed his full lips with a slight brush of mine.

You are the best mateanyone could ask for. Speaking whileour mouths were still fused, Nic sipped from my lips slowly.

My Review:

This is the first book that I've read from this publisher and I was very pleased with the quality of the book production. This book is part of what they call their Romantic Domestic Discipline line, this is not BDSM in any way, shape or form, though spanking is an element.

This story began with Brandi Dalton and Colby Pennington's wedding, when Brandi begins having second thoughts about agreeing to marry a man who wants her to agree to "obey" him in the traditional sense of marriage and who she has agreed can "discipline" her by spanking her when she does things that are foolish, dangerous or bad for their marriage. Brandi is an interesting main character; she's twenty-six, has just finished getting her masters degree and is physically very attractive. Emotionally though, Brandi, is still somewhat adolescent, she makes impulsive decisions, has trouble being honest all of the time and really doesn’t want to take on too many responsibilities that could interfere with having fun. She’s also somewhat spoiled having grown up with a successful father, who has indulged her to a point, and because of a large inheritance that she has received.

Colby Pennington is an interesting lead character. His best friend is Brandi’s brother, Daniel, and he’s known Brandi almost all of her life. He’s also ten years older, owns his own successful ranch and is considered to be quite the catch in town. He is an Alpha type male who wants to be in charge but at the same time is willing to trust and respect his partner and love her with all of his heart. No one was more surprised when he fell for Brandi. Colby is determined to have a successful marriage and he knows many of Brandi’s issues, so he’s very honest and frank about what he expects from her and their marriage. Colby explains he believes in spanking and asks Brandi to agree to setting boundaries in their marriage and accept domestic discipline understanding he would never abuse her; she has to agree to trust him.

The scenes between Brandi and Colby are very well done. Their story is basically told in chapters that highlight different situations that occur during their first year of marriage. While there were times I wasn’t completely comfortable with Colby and the domestic discipline, Brandi was a constant challenge in their relationship. She got easily bored, ignored her health (she’s pre-diabetic and eats an entire box of chocolates) and occasionally tried to hide things from Colby. There was however a lot of love, a lot of sex and overall it was clear that Colby loved Brandi and wanted to make sure she was in his life for a long time. They truly loved and trusted each other.

This is the first book that I’ve read by Starla Kaye, and it won’t be the last. I was very pleased with the author’s writing style and while there were some scenes where I was a bit squeamish, overall this story held my attention from start to finish. I also enjoyed visiting the author’s website which provided me with her outlook and definition of domestic discipline.

My Review:

Night Promises: Night Pleasures 1 by Tonya R. Callihan is the first story in her new erotic paranormal series. It's a short, fast moving story dealing with romance and a murder mystery. The characters aren't as fully developed as I would have liked but overall it was an enjoyable read.

Kelly O'Keefe is an good lead character, she's known about vampires since she was twelve years old and was saved by one. Noe she's part owner of a night club, Night Pleasures, which caters to their kind. She knows that vampires are dangerous but she knows how to work with them and believes that her vampire partner, Mac, would save her if something comes up. When her younger sister is killed by a vampire, Kelly holds herself responsible for introducing her to their existence. She's also confused over her growing attraction to Connor, one of her vampire customers.

Connor is an interesting vampire, he's attracted to Kelly and believes that she's his mate but is reluctant to let her know of his attraction. Turned by Micah, a centuries old vampire, when he was dying, Connor is still somewhat conflicted about his vampire existence. It's only when he realizes that Kelly is going to jeopardize her safety by investigating her sister's death that Connor finally realizes he must step forward and protect the woman he loves.

The scenes between Kelly and Connor are okay for the most part but I would have enjoyed them more if the story's pace had moved slower and if the characters had been more fully developed. I would have liked the romance to have been better developed but it was sufficient for the story, though it wasn't as spicy as I was expecting. The secondary characters were pivotal to the story and I particularly liked both Mac and Micah, and their possible romance, which I believe will be the focus of the next book in this series.

The story ends at an okay place with Connor and Kelly exploring their future together and only partly solving Kelly's sisters murder. There are some unresolved issues which I'm hoping are addressed in the sequel to this story. I'm looking forward to reading where this author takes us in this new world that she's building.
